5 Questions To Ask Before Choosing Your First Dance Song

5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing Your First Dance Song

Your first dance is one of the most memorable moments of your wedding day. It's more than just a dance—it's a reflection of your relationship, your personality as a couple, and the atmosphere you want to create for your guests. With so many song choices available, finding the perfect one can feel overwhelming.

Before you settle on a song, ask yourselves these five important questions.

1. Does a Song or Artist Bring Back Meaningful Memories?

The most memorable first dances often have a personal story behind them. Think about songs that remind you of your first date, a road trip, a special vacation, or a meaningful moment in your relationship.

Choosing a song with sentimental value can make your first dance feel authentic and emotional. Even if it's not a traditional wedding song, the connection you share with it can make the moment unforgettable.

2. Does the Vibe of the Song Feel True to Who You Are as a Couple?

Your wedding should reflect your personality, and your first dance is no exception. Are you romantic and sentimental? Fun and playful? Modern and energetic?

Rather than choosing a song simply because it's popular, select one that genuinely represents your relationship. The right song should feel natural and tell your story, not someone else's.

3. Do You Want to Learn a Dance Style You Can Use Long After the Wedding?

Your first dance can be more than a one-time performance. Consider whether you'd like to learn a dance style that you can continue enjoying together after your wedding day.

Whether it's a classic waltz, smooth foxtrot, romantic rumba, or even a fun swing dance, learning a style that interests you can become a shared hobby and create lasting memories beyond the wedding celebration.

4. Does the Tempo Feel Comfortable and Natural?

Not every beautiful song is easy to dance to. As you listen to potential songs, pay attention to the tempo and rhythm.

A song that feels too fast may make you feel rushed, while one that's too slow can be challenging to move to naturally. Choose a tempo that allows you to feel relaxed, confident, and connected to each other on the dance floor.

If you're taking dance lessons, your instructor can help you determine which songs work best with your desired dance style and comfort level.

5. What Feeling Do You Want Your First Dance to Create?

Think about the atmosphere you want to create during this special moment.

Do you want your first dance to feel:

  • Romantic and intimate?
  • Fun and lighthearted?
  • Deeply emotional?
  • Energetic enough to get the party started?

The emotion you want your guests to experience can help narrow down your song choices and guide your dance style.

The Perfect Song Is the One That Feels Like You

There is no single "right" first dance song. The best choice is one that reflects your relationship, feels comfortable to dance to, and creates the experience you want to share with each other and your guests.

By asking these five questions, you'll be able to move beyond the endless song lists and find a first dance that feels meaningful, memorable, and uniquely yours.

Megan & Spencer (pictured here) chose "You Are In Love" by Taylor Swift for their first dance. From a dance perspective, it has several advantages: It's romantic with intimate lyrics, has a tempo that works with a wide variety of dance styles, is familiar because Taylor Swift is so popular right now but the song choice is unique enough that this moment didn't feel like "every other wedding". Megan said that besides loving Taylor Swift, they chose their song because they "liked that the song focused on the little things that make a relationship (making the day to day routines special and appreciating the little things)". It was the perfect reflection of Spencer & Megan's love. Please enjoy a few more pictures from their beautiful first dance below.
